Letter from the President

Full Circle 

Hello to all,

As some of you may (or may not) know, I have ascended to the position of President of our prestigious running club.  I assume this role with great humility, respect, fear, and hope for the future.  I was an original patron of Shawn Young (I ran against Shawn in high school and have pictures of polka-dot shorts and long hair to prove it) and recall him and the other boys of the shop, starting the Sierra Challenge Express running club.   Although my full involvement would not present itself until many years later, I have a great love and admiration for our club and all it's members.  I find that my personal journey has brought me full circle from admiring the names on the “Runner of the Year” plaque which was hanging in the running store (and fueling a desire for my name to be on it) to actually being the President of the Express.  As our great past Presidents (Shawn, Deb, & Sherrie...I'll try my best to emulate your greatness!!) have done to bring the club as far as we are now, I hope to continue with our growth and commitment to running together.   I see our club continuing to provide a fun and challenging environment for our running community.  With the world class marathon and other races that our club now directs, we have a unique opportunity and responsibility to our community to provide and present running as a compliment (or fixture) to life and show what a gratifying sport it is.  While many may never choose to compete, or run harder on that additional box-cart hill that Coach Ray sends us up for the fourth time (which was supposed to be only two),  running can still be a part of one's soul and framework for their life.  I see this club as a tangible group to remind us that running is more than just a physical activity, but an act to bring people together and to complete us as human beings.  For our future, I don't have any lofty motivating “let's get this done” type goals.  I only hope that we will continue to stive for and achieve our own personal goals.  Whether it is to get our name on a plaque, run the long way during Coach's workouts, or merely step into the Saturday morning group practice with a bunch of crazy running people.  I will strive to serve our club well.  I hope you will join me.
