| Unity & purpose.Letter from the President, JulyThe season has now finally heated up and to coincide, Coach is heating up his workouts. How about those 3 x “8 minute” intervals (we should buy Coach a functioning watch). Well now that we are officially into the best part of the running season, in my opinion, I am looking forward to running in the sunshine instead of having to duck people (cyclist) in the dark (I'm not always successful, come ask me if you want the full story). I know for most that running when it is 100 degrees outside is not attractive, however, I absolutely love it. I know I am different (in many ways) but that is just how I roll. I am aware that my running partners are few and far between this time of year and it is okay by me. Saturday mornings I can count on Joe staying with me for a mile or two (then he runs away....thanks Joe) and the people that we will pass along the way will offer their company; if only so briefly. But brief as it is I still hear the encouragement of “good job” and “go Scott!” I honestly would love to reciprocate the encouragement, but running with Joe leaves me without the breath to reply (again, thanks, Joe). But despite the lack of oxygen necessary to talk to fellow runners, there are plenty of opportunities to meet and greet each other. I meet a fair handful of new people coming by Sierra Running Company inquiring about the running club. I also get the chance to talk to new runners and members on the warm-downs (after I've caught my breath). As a club, we have a camaraderie that I admire. That's why I am upset that I will miss our club bus trip to San Luis Obispo for the City to Sea Half Marathon (Have you signed up yet?? If not, get cracken'!). But I can look forward to hanging out with you all at a club BBQ sometime in the near future (details to come soon). As for other items and activities I must address my first Presidential note to you all saying that I did not have any lofty “let's get this done” agendas. But alas, as most politicians, I must recant and readdress. I think that we should come together more often and enjoy the club as an entity. I also feel that that entity should serve a greater purpose than ourselves. With recent budget cuts to city services, there are many maintenance items that are going to be left undone around our fabled Woodward Park. There is a process in effect to work together with the San Joaquin River Parkway to establish a “trail crew” of sorts so we would be able to give back to Coach's beloved Cow loop (just think...we could add short cuts...shhhhhhhh!). This is an opportunity for us to “give back” and help to maintain an area that we use regularly. It could also serve as some cross training depending on the type of work you want to do. But before that process goes into effect, let's start now. Pick up a piece of trash occasionally. Motivate those around you. Say "hi" to strangers on the trail (unless you are running with Joe, then at least wave).Just run. Scott |
